ANNOUNCEMENT
2014 ASN Canada FIA Canadian AutoSlalom
Championship Event Awarded
Mississauga, Ontario – Aug 11, 2013
ASN Canada FIA has announced that the ASN Canada FIA Canadian AutoSlalom Championships will return to Summerside, PEI, August 1-3, 2014, organized by the Moncton Motor Sport Club (MMSC) with support from Atlantic Region Motor Sports (ARMS) and under the leadership of Ming-Duc Wong, the competition director of MMSC.
“ASN Canada FIA is pleased that the Canadian AutoSlalom Championships are returning to Atlantic Canada” said Terry Epp, chairman of ASN Canada FIA’s National SoloSport Committee.
“Slalom at Slemon, as the event is nicknamed has an enviable history of producing challenging and very competitive competitions on the 800 000 square foot concrete apron of the Slemon Park Airport. It is not your typical parking lot slalom and the competitors’ driving skills, as well as their vehicle preparation skills, are amply tested in the longest timed runs to be found in the country.
The National SoloSport Committee is also looking forward to the ambience of the event which will feature the friendly and warm hospitality that greeted the 95 entrants that came from across the country and the north-east of the US when the AutoSlalom championships were last held here in 2008.”
Ming-Duc said, ““2014 is a special year as it marks the 20th annual Slalom@Slemon and we look forward to sharing this special milestone with competitors from across Canada and the US. We are planning on making a true national level event with some Maritime hospitality mixed in. Slemon features a large and open course area which offers a lot of variety in course design and courses that run in excess of 100 seconds.
Aside from this amazing event, there is lots to see and do in Prince Edward Island. PEI is a popular tourist destination with many attractions a short drive away. Getting to the Island is especially easy with the Confederation Bridge. You can drive across at just about any time and in about 10 minutes. We hope to see you in Summerside in 2014!”
Dave Hull, president of ARMS said, “The wealth of experience the organizing committee brings to this event is amazing. About 2/3rds of the committee have been part of the organizing team for Slalom@Slemon for the past 19 years. So, when you add the Atlantic Canadian hospitality into the equation, the must attend event in the 2014 Canadian AutoSlalom season promises to be the Canadian AutoSlalom Championships / 20th Anniversary Slalom@Slemon, in Summerside, PEI. It’s never too early to start making your plans to attend.”
Canadian AutoSlalom Championships Fast Facts:
From 1972 through 1991, Canadian SoloSport competitors enjoyed a National AutoSlalom Day with identically designed courses run on the same day on different venues across the country from which national class champions were determined.
In 2000, a group of enthusiastic SoloSport competitors from across Canada created a single national championship event, the Canadian National AutoSlalom Championships, which ran through to 2003.
With the formation of the ASN Canada FIA National SoloSport Committee in 2004, the ASN Canada FIA Canadian AutoSlalom Championships concept became part of the mandate of the ASN National SoloSport Committee and the committee elected to hold an annual Canadian AutoSlalom Championship event alternating between eastern and western Canada. This year will mark the 35th time that the AutoSlalom Championship has been held.
In 2004, the National SoloSport Committee created a national set of AutoSlalom Regulations and in 2005, added a new feature for Canadian AutoSlalom, a formula for determining an overall national AutoSlalom champion.
The first championship event held under the ASN Canada FIA banner was in 2004 at Sanair racetrack in Quebec. In 2005, the event was in Red Deer while Toronto was the location of the 2006 event.
2007 saw the Canadian AutoSlalom Championships in the west when the event was held in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia where the event was hosted by the Vancouver Chinese Motorsport Club. Excellence was evident in every aspect of the championships and 132 entries vied for top results.
In 2008 the championships were in Slemon Park, Prince Edward Island organized by Moncton Motor Sport Club. The organizing committee designed a 4000 foot course that challenged and delighted the 95 entries that attended the three day event. Carl Wener of Montréal turned in an exceptional performance and won the Canadian AutoSlalom Title as Canada’s best AutoSlalom driver.
Since PEI, the championships have also been held in Saskatoon, Saint Eustache, Fort McLeod and, in 2012, Barrie. In 2013, the championships returned to Pitt Meadows where more than 120 competitors competed.
