The engine on the old Rx7 has finally come to an end. I have a replacement engine coming and am looking to borrow a engine crane/picker to get the old engine out and get the new engine in.

The Rx7 comes out of storage in mid-April so I won't need it until then.

Anyone have one I can borrow for a week or 2 in April?

Thanks Steve

Hi Steve. If Tim's doesn't work out for you, the Apex Rotorsports local rotary maintenance co-operative (or Atlantic Rotary Mafia as Gary Woods dubbed us) has an engine hoist, as well as engine stand and rotary engine stand adapter. We just used the hoist today to put an engine in one of the 3rd Gen's actually.
We need to pull the engine from my car to replace the rear iron soon, but my guy hasn't finished porting the iron yet, so no rush.

Plan is to be in North Carolina for the Rotary Rally in mid april, but you have another option at least.

Another hoist here in Sackville you're welcome to borrow, though I don't have a vehicle to move it.

Thanks Dave

That would be perfect if I could borrow yours and the stand/adaptor. The engine is coming in next week and I plan to clean and prep it before the Rx comes out of storage on April 17. Let me know when I can pick them up.

And when the time comes for th re-install, feel free to lend you great experience if you like!!! I have never done it.

Thanks Tim and Rob and Gord for the offer. Since Dave's has been adapted for a rotary it will make things easier.

Thanks guys

Steve

Steve, we can certainly work something out. Installation and removal services are available as well. To be negotiated. Smile

Are you planning to pull the old motor and rebuild, or swap in another motor right away? Stock motor, or something "interesting?"

Nothing special. I sourced a good condition Keg from Ontario. Comes complete except for front cover and injectors. Right out of a 84 GSL-SE so the swap should be fairly straight forward.

I plan to have my old injectors cleaned/reconditioned. Maybe a new clutch and radiator.

Any assistance or guidance is appreciated.

I assume I can remove the engine without taking out the transmission. Is that true?

Thanks again

Steve

Unless there's something wonky in the design you can usually do it. It can often be pretty damn hard to get at all the bellhousing bolts with everything still on the car but its usually possible.

First gen's use the same clutch design as the second gen's, so the easiest way to get the engine out is to take it out without the transmission. There are only 6 bell housing bolts, and they are all pretty accessable as the bell housing is actually in front of the firewall (a little).

As Craig said, unbolting the bellhousing isn't all that hard if you know where to look for the bolts. The engine will come out easier by it's self, but, taking the transmission out attached isn't too bad if you wanted to do something to the transmission at the same time. (I.e. get that refreshed or something.)

I would say you'll want to get a new set of motor mounts, as the 25 year old rubber ones tend to not be in good shape at this point. Also, for the cost of the part vs. the trouble of changing now vs. later, I would recommend getting a clutch release bearing, pilot bearing, and maybe even a whole new clutch (don't know how old your current one is) while you are at it.

Thanks Gerry. Our little rotary group went splits on the hoist so we wouldn't need to bother people (like you.)

How do you keep track of where you keep all your cars and tools, anyway?
At least all of my cars are in the garage/driveway/yard.
