Yes you need a transponder, this is a good place to start if there are used ones someone shoukld respond.
I think SH in Montreal is the main distributor and you can call Gerald Caseley. |

Roy there is a used one for sale in Dartmouth.
Not sure if he still has it but try: selmadani@gmail.com
If you have any other friends looking to get into karting a co-worker said that he may be selling his kart stuff, chassis, a 5.5, a 6.5 and all gear with spare wheels and tires and transponver for $2000.
A great deal on a clean starter package. _________________ Past President Atlantic Motorsport Karters Association

It is hard to compile an entire itemized list, some people can arrive with a kart and a tool box while others come with spare engines, tires, a whole host of spare parts and bins upon bins of stuff.
The very essentials include:
Kart (with motor/tires bla bla bla...)
transponder (charged)
helmet (Snell 2005 minimum)
race suit (or leathers/denim clothing)
rib vest
gloves
footwear (not necessary race shoes, but something more substantial than sandals)
a wrench set (mostly metric)
a socket set (ditto...metric)
Allan keys (most karts have hex hardware)
and just general tools, hammer, screwdrivers, hack saw, measuring tape
its a good idea to have some spare fluids on hand (oil and brake fluid)
as a beginner you can get by on off the shelf synthetic 5W30, typical DOT3 brake fluid.
the last point that I want to make, firstly keep an eye on www.ckranb.com we hold a new driver race school/orientation every spring that is mandatory before you race. This type of thing is what we cover: what you need, where to get it, how a race day is conducted, safety, kart maintenance, and track time with experienced drivers present for your consultation. _________________ You don't race for the fame...money...or glory...you do it because you love it!

A rule book would be nice too, you should read/understand both parts, not just the tech rules!
Jared's link should be http://www.ckranb.ca/ not .com It has a lot of important information within.. including the two rule books and the Medical Waiver you have to have.
Also check over this, it's the test for new karters, all answers are in the rule book http://www.asncanada.com/2008_Karting_Regulatio...t%20Questions.pdf _________________ Warning!

Roy, so which karts did you guys get?
and yes cleaning and detailing them in the basement is great fun. Plus you will learn how they are put together. I always recommend new karters to paint their chassis over the first winter, this way they take it all apart and have to reassemble it. _________________
